Despite the name, modern paleontology reveals this formidable Miocene and Pliocene shark is actually a direct evolutionary ancestor of today’s Great White Shark (Carcharodon carcharias). Reaching lengths over 20 feet, C. hastalis dominated ancient oceans using its smooth-edged, broad teeth to grasp and impale fast-moving marine prey. Over millions of years, this species gradually evolved the iconic serrations of the modern Great White Shark tooth.
