Florida’s most famous extinct giant tortoises belong to the genus Hesperotestudo (commonly called the "Western turtle"). They were much larger than even the Galapagos Island giant tortoises. These jumbo-sized tortoises left many bones in the fossil record due to their very sturdy shells and thick skin.
