Florida boasts a rich, 45-million-year history of sirenians (manatees and dugongs). While their teeth can be harder to find, their dense bones are found in abundance across the state. Modern dugongs are now only found in the the Indo-Pacific region, however the West Indian manatee (Trichechus manatus) still inhabit Florida's waterways.
