Partial Gomphothere Tooth from Coastal Georgia

Gomphotheriidae was an extinct family of elephant-like mammals that were common in the Southeastern USA during the Miocene and Pliocene epochs. Their large teeth and unique tusks were specialized in browsing and rooting for food. Often referred to as shovel-tusked elephants, teeth from these once common animals are rarely found and prized among fossil collectors.
